“LOCAL SALON A CUT ABOVE IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION”
White Rock, BC, Aug 2011 – It’s like the Oscars for hairstylists and, as Stephanie Wright, the owner of Mystique Hair Design—White Rock’s popular salon-by-the-sea— will tell you, it is an honor to be nominated.
Every year, La Biosthetique of Paris, makers of high-end beauty products, sponsors an international competition to recognize outstanding achievements in hair design. Thirteen countries are invited to participate and Canada, as always, would be well represented with entries from prestigious “name” stylists across the country. Stephanie Wright decided to put her talents up against the best.
“We’re quite proud of the work we do here, and of the way we keep ourselves up to date with the latest and best,” she says. “I wanted to prove that you don’t have to be a big name in an urban center to be at the forefront of what’s happening in hair design.” It seems the elite panel of judges, including world-renowned European stylist Trevor Sorbie, agreed. Her submission, based on before-and-after photos, and taking into account make-up and fashion choices as well, took third place in the national showdown.
Her model for the competition was one of her stylists, Jenna Blaauwandraat. Another Mystique employee, Jessica Sutherland provided the make-up expertise to complement the striking, yet everyday-stylish cut that caught the judges’ eyes. “I took into account Jenna’s face shape and complexion, and went for a look that is quite structured and required precision cutting. I wanted to create something timeless and elegant and at the same time wearable for the everyday client.”
For Wright, the recognition of her esteemed peers in the world of hair design has been gratifying, but she’s just as happy about bringing that international style sensibility to White Rock. “It shouldn’t be just about what works on a runway in Paris. It’s about finding the look that works best for each individual and their particular lifestyle.”
“In that sense,” she says, “great style is a universal language.”

LOCAL BUSINESS TAKING BASHFUL OUT OF BOUDOIR
White Rock, B.C. — While the vast majority of couples plan to exchange customary gifts of flowers, chocolate, and candy this Valentine’s Day, some will be honing a more erotic edge on Cupid’s arrow. At the Valentine Pin-Up Open House on February 7, women from across the Lower Mainland will sign-up to strip down. They’ll be exploring the growing trend of boudoir photography—much to the satisfaction of their significant others.
The annual ‘meet the photographer’ open house is the brainchild of Stephanie Wright, owner of Mystique Hair Design in White Rock. Wright says the idea came from a desire to make exploring and participating in the seductive art of boudoir a little less intimidating for women.
“With our customers’ interest in glamour makeovers and vintage looks, we sensed there might be an appetite to go one step further into boudoir as a sexy gift for that someone special, ”says Wright. “But good boudoir is not just about glamour and sensuality—it’s about confidence.”
Yet, for many women, that’s the hard part. The idea of posing for provocative yet tasteful photos in front of a virtual stranger is anything but confidence inspiring.
“Our idea was to create a fun, informal atmosphere for exploring the concept of boudoir, without having to take that ‘cold turkey’ initial plunge,” Wright says. “Before they even commit, they can meet the photographer and talk about any creative ideas they might have for a shoot. This way, it’s a familiar face behind the camera and they know what to expect going in—that builds a feeling of control and confidence.
“Every woman has a pin-up inside of her—we have the pleasure of helping bring it out.”
The Valentine Pin-Up Open House takes place at Mystique Hair Design in White Rock on Sunday, February 7, 2010. For more information please contact Stephanie Wright at 604.542.3616.
